An In Depth Look At Faux Wood Blinds For Windows

>> Wednesday, 24 February 2010

Faux wood blinds are constructed from a range of materials and are meant to look like various finishes of real wood. Some of these blinds are constructed using a mixture of vinyl polymers and real particles or composites of wood. Depending on the finish used, they may also look like real wooden blinds, but without the extravagant cost.

While it's true that faux wood blinds are less costly than their real counterparts, is this cheaper alternative actually worth the extra savings? Here are some advantages and disadvantages of getting them in your home.

Advantages

- They may last longer than real wood and are definitely less costly than those made from real wood. They also help to save money over time by requiring less repairs.

- They are simple to clean and stain-resistant. Many of them are also resistant to yellowing or fading over time. Most blinds can be cleaned using soap and water.

- They can be found with slats of varying sizes and work seamlessly in just about any type of room.

- Genuine wood is susceptible to temperature fluctuations and may distort over time with exposure to the elements. Whereas faux wood blinds can be used in kitchens and bathrooms without worrying about excessive heat, humidity and moisture. Faux wood blinds are normally very tough and do not crack, split, or warp.

Disadvantages

- Faux wood blinds may lack the genuine look of real wood, depending on the location and overall design of the house.

- Some cheaper faux wood may gradually sag or frequently need their strings, or ladders as they are called, completely replaced.

- Color selection is constrained with faux wood blinds, which cannot be re-stained or painted.

- Some styles of faux wood may weigh twice as much as blinds made from wood and are substantially harder to lift and position into place. Furthermore, the heavier the blind, the more ladders it will need, which may block the view when the blinds are opened.

Average Prices

The costs depends on the size of the windows, including the length and width and how many you'll need to order. When comparison shopping, be sure to have the exact measurements on hand, as well as the number of windows that need done so you'll have a better projection of your eventual expenditure.

For single windows found in bedrooms, living and dining areas, faux wood blinds may cost anywhere from $30 or $40 and up based on their width and length. Color may also affect the price, as well as whether or not the blinds are being custom ordered, or bought pre-cut to size.
